Caroni Distillery: Tinidad's Rum Legend, Lost and Revered
Located in the heart of Trinidad’s Caroni Plain, Caroni Distillery began producing rum early in the 20th century and built a reputation for bold, heavy‑style rums with character and depth. It was closely tied to the island’s sugar‑cane industry—molasses from the estate fed the distillation, and the tropical climate accelerated maturation. Over decades it supplied both local demand and export markets, especially for rum blends. When the distillery closed its doors in 2002 (with closure precipitated by the decline of sugar production and structural industry changes) it left behind a vault of barrels that later became the stuff of legend. Caroni is now sought after by collectors and rum lovers alike for its rarity, its unique flavour, and its status as a “lost distillery” of the Caribbean.

Caroni is renowned for its rich, dense, and unapologetically bold rums. Many fans talk about the "dirty" notes—tar, rubber, oil—which sound odd but are part of the charm. But there’s also balance: dried fruit sweetness, dark cocoa, and that thick, oaky warmth. Caroni's flavour tells a story: hot climate, long ageing, and no shortcuts.
